against Liberty

San Francisco – The San Benito girl’s volleyball team has shaken off its disappointment over falling in the Central Coast Section championship game to Carlmont in a spirited, hard-fought five game match.

The Haybalers under first year head coach Dean Askanas have been given new life with a CIF first round playoff win over the Lowell Cardinal, and are squarely focused on a Northern California title.

The ‘Balers rolled over a much smaller Lowell team Tuesday night in San Francisco in three straight games to advance to the quarterfinal match against Liberty in Brentwood on Saturday.

“Our general athleticism separated us from Lowell,” said Askanas. “Our height, speed and strength can get overwhelming for a smaller team.”

Following the loss to Carlmont in the CCS final, Askanas wanted his team to play more aggressively and not worry about committing errors. In the match against Lowell the ‘Balers executed their new game plan and had the Cardinal back on their heels by the conclusion of the first game.

In the CIF quarterfinal San Benito will have to keep its aggression up as it faces off against a tough Liberty team. The No. 2 seeded Lions were the North Coast Section champions and went undefeated in the Bay Valley Athletic League.
