The best laid plans don’t work out on occasion. Four Hollister High football players participated in the Salinas Jaycees All-Star Football Classic last Friday in Soledad. Representing the Haybalers on the East squad were Clay Peer, Lee Osborne, Brandon Para and Trenton Young.

The East prevailed 7-6 on a last-minute touchdown. Peer, the Tri-County Athletic League Most Valuable Lineman, was supposed be at center for that drive, but a sprained right ankle on the second play of the game negated that.

Snapping the ball was Para, who was the impromptu No. 3 on the depth chart after Peer’s backup went down not long after Peer did. Para, a First Team All-T-CAL nosetackle, played only 10 plays on defense because he was needed on offense.

“The coach asked me if I could snap,” said Para, who hadn’t played center since his junior varsity season. “I took a deep breath and said I could. I wish I could have played more defense, though.”

Para, who will attend Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo but won’t play football, recovered a fumble during his short stint on defense.

Peer, meanwhile, aggravated an old injury.

“Some guy rolled up on me,” said Peer, who will play center for Gavilan College in the fall. “It was disappointing not to play, but it was a lot of fun practicing with the guys for two weeks. It was worth driving all the way to Soledad for that.”

Osborne, another First Team T-CAL performer, played cornerback. Young, who was added when the call went out for a linebacker, played defense, but played running back in the second half.
