Weather conditions in Salinas made top times and marks hard to achieve at Thursday’s track and field meet featuring Hollister High and North Salinas.

The Balers settled with some personal records and an easy sweep of the Vikings in all four divisions.

The varsity boys defeated the Vikings 100-36, while the Baler girls had an easier time with a 122-13 victory. The frosh-soph boys won 107.5 to 22.5, while the junior varsity girls rolled to a 115-15 triumph.

The biggest item on this ticket is the fact that, with Salinas beating Palma Thursday, the league meet on May 17 has come down to a Balers-Cowboys rematch for the league crown. There doesn’t seem to be anyone in the league who can touch the Baler girls.

One of the best marks by the Balers was a 41-8 triple jump by Armando Larez, a PR. Larez was second behind Thomas Fernandez, who jumped 42-1 1/2. Steve Bianchi went over 40-0 for third.

Chris Stephens PR’d to win the discus for the Balers with a toss of 132-7. Stephens PR’d in the shot at 42-9. Distance runner Jon Rivera showed his athleticism by high jumping 5-10. Fernandez won the event at 6-0.

Baler head coach Randy Logue was disappointed with his 4X100 relay team, which failed to finish the race for the fifth time this year.

“There’s no excuse for us not finishing that relay,” said Logue. “All we have to do is just hand the baton off. I’m really mad about it and I told the team that.”

As for the Baler girls, Naomi Ruiz had another good effort to win the discus at 127-4. Jamie O’brian’s 100-meter time of 12.9 against the wind was impressive.

The league trials are this Wednesday at Andy Hardin Field and begin at 2:30 p.m. and run until approximately 8 p.m. The league finals are on May 17 and commence at 10 a.m. at Hartnell College.
