The nonprofit Jovenes de Antano received a donation from MT Selective Furniture in the form of a bedroom set. The set includes an Aico bed, night stand and armoire valued at $5,000.

“It’s great. This just landed in our lap,” said Pauline Valdivia, executive director of Jovenes de Antano.

MT Selective Furniture owners Mindy Hoang and Tony Nguyen wanted to donate to a local agency and also increase awareness about the store. The furniture store has been in business for more than four years.

“It’s important to help the community,” Hoang said. “If we can help get funds for them, it’s great.”

Hoang also cited the need for donations with various programs on the chopping block due to state budget problems.

“With all the diminishing funds across the state, it’s going to hit us also,” Valdivia said.

Valdivia plans to raffle the furniture set off to raise money for some of the organizations’ programs. The two most needy are Meals on Wheels, a food delivery program for senior citizens, and Congregation Meals, which provides noon-time meals five days a week.

“All the money will be used to provide services,” Valdivia said. “If we can’t balance our budget, we have to go out and fund-raise. ”

Valdivia said she hopes the raffle will help raise more than the cost of the furniture.

“We need to get the community involved to assist us. It’s hard to keep asking businesses for donations,” she said.

Although Valdivia has plans for the money, the Jovenes de Antano Board of Directors has to approve expenditures. Valdivia makes recommendations to Board members.
