Due to state budget cuts, there will be no winter intersession courses at Gavilan College this year, according to a press release from the school.

The topic has been discussed by both campus groups and the shared governance committee over the past few weeks.

After looking at full-time student projections for the year and the development of the spring schedule, the decision has been made to not hold winter intersession for this academic year, according to the release, which does not indicate how much the college will save with the move.

The elimination of winter intersession means the college can offer more classes during the spring semester when more students are enrolled and when a greater variety of classes can be offered, the college noted.

Winter intersession was scheduled to run from Jan. 4 through Jan. 29 with the spring semester set to begin Feb. 3.

The state has reduced funding for many state services this year, including community colleges, in an attempt to close the state’s budget deficit. Even though there has been record demand for enrollment, the state is not currently funding enrollment growth and has reduced the base enrollment target by three percent for 2009/10, according to the college.

The college formed an Expenditure Reduction Task Force, which identified and recommended places to save money.
