GILROY — The dream of moving on to a four-year institution came to fruition for four Gavilan football players Wednesday.
Running backs Jakari Johnson and Donavan Weatherspoon along with defensive back Bryson Mero and defensive lineman William Lee all inked their letters of intent at Gavilan College with their new teams.
Johnson signed to receive a scholarship with the University of New Mexico. During his time with the Rams, Johnson was a two-time All-Coast Conference and two-time All-Region selection. He led not only the Rams, but also the Coast Conference and state of California with 203 all-purpose yards per game this season. He also led the conference in receptions with 80.3 per game.
Lee, who is already enrolled at Toledo University, inked his letter to play with the Rockets next year. The D-lineman was selected to the All-Coast Conference and All-Region teams twice in his tenure with Gavilan. He was also named the Coast Conference Defensive MVP this season. Lee led the conference and state of California in tackles for loss with a two year total of 54.5. He’s ranked as the No. 7 defensive end in junior college by Rivals.com.
Weatherspoon and Mero both signed their letters of intent to receive a scholarship for football at Benedict College in South Carolina. Weatherspoon led the Coast Conference in return yards this season, averaging 28.6. He was also ranked No. 4 in the conference in all-purpose yards per game with 120.8. Weatherspoon was the two-time GPA Champion for the Rams, earning a 3.292 for the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters.
Mero was ranked No. 2 in the state of California in pass defense following the 2012 season. He was a two-year starter for the Rams and coach Spencer Gilford said he was “vital part of a secondary.”
