The Gavilan Rams softball team won both ends of a doubleheader at home Saturday.
In the first game, the Rams (3-1) edged Porterville 5-4, and in the second game, Gavilan pounded Laney 21-2.
Dani Hernandez, who gave up eight hits and had five strikeouts, got the win for the Rams in the first game.
After the Rams shut down the Pirates 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth inning, they erupted for three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Mikhaela Osuna led off the inning with a base hit and was forced out on Alicia Reese’s fielder’s choice. Audra Brown hit an RBI triple, and Amanda Ross had an RBI single. After a pair of Gavilan walks, Jenn Sherratt grounded out to score the final run.
“Overall a great game by both teams,” said coach Nikki Dequin-Thompson. “We need to sharpen up a bit on a few things. But I was happy with our performance. Dani did a great job on the mound. She and Reese work very well together.”
In the second game, the Rams pounded out 24 hits. Gavilan was lead by Julie Broyer, who earned the win on the mound as well as adding a pair of home runs and two singles offensively.
Brown had four hits, and Amanda Perez and Reese had three hits each.
