‘Balers knock off Monte Vista 3-0
Hollister – The final tune-up before Tri-County Athletic League play went well for the San Benito girls soccer team as it picked up a 3-0 win over Monte Vista Christian at home Saturday.
The Haybalers, which open league play today against Notre Dame at Cal State Monterey Bay, scored all three goals in the first half and played solid defense throughout in earning their fifth win of the season – already surpassing last season’s win total.
Scoring early has proven to be a key all season long for San Benito (5-2-1) and it helped the ‘Balers again in this win as freshman Sophie Coelho punched in a goal five minutes in on an assist from Brittany Huth.
San Benito took a two-goal advantage in the 29th minute when a JC Clayton corner kick was fielded by Coelho, who fed it to Huth for a goal.
Another corner kick by Clayton in the 39th minute resulted in another goal as Coelho headed in her second of the game.
The ‘Balers’ goalkeeper Emily Key was strong in the net, stopping nine shots to earn the shutout.
“We pretty much dominated the game,” coach Mike Schurig said. “The girls started playing really well as a team. The girls did a good job of keeping them off the net.”
With seven goals on the season, Coelho is fifth in the Monterey Bay area in scoring. She’s provided a big spark to the team with her finishing ability, but Schurig is quick to point out that the success of Coelho and the team is a result of everyone on the field working well together.
“It’s a team effort,” he said. “Having her speed and individual talent is great, but it’s nice having a team doing a good job and giving good support to help her get those goals.”
