Rose Vandenberg scored two goals Friday to lead the Balers to a 2-2 draw at Pioneer in the final preseason game.

“We both felt fortunate with the tie,” said Baler coach Mike Schurig, whose team is 4-4-2 heading into league. “Neither one of us wanted the loss. They won the first half, but we won the second half.”

Pioneer (3-4-2) scored a goal in the opening minute after a corner kick and then scored the other goal in the 15th minute.

But a minute later, Vandenberg scored on an assist from Julie Broyer. Broyer passed it up to Vandenberg, who touch-passed it by the defender and scored.

In the 56th minute, Vandenberg scored the equalizer on an assist from Chantel Guajardo. Vandenberg turned around the defender and popped it over the goalie, who had come out.

“We pretty much dominated the rest of the game,” Schurig said. “They had a couple opportunities, but we were on their side most of the time.”

The Baler preseason has been a tough one, but Schurig said it has been beneficial to the team.

“I am really glad we played the harder teams that we did to show us what we need to work on,” Schurig said. “I would like to play the tough teams again next year. Hopefully, we don’t play Santa Cruz right off the bat again.”
