City offers wealth of activities

“How true it is that, if we are cheerful and contented, all nature smiles, the air seems more balmy, the sky clearer, the earth a brighter green and the stars seem to rejoice with us.”

How do we begin an exercise program? One great local resource is our parks and recreation department. Delivered last week was Community Services Magazine.

The City of Gilroy lists activities we may remember from our youth: family kayak adventures, beginning English riding lessons, soccer and more.

You may recognize me if you teach one of these classes. I have dropped into many programs over the past 23 years. My children have spent summers enrolled.

Now thanks to the great organizational efforts of Gail Glines and her Community Services Department in cooperation with Gilroy Unified Schools, my youngest is a volunteer at a local school and parks Day Program.

Single or family, young or young at heart, there is a program for everyone.

My favorite has been the T’ai Chi classes. Friend and colleague Rita Quintero suggested a class when she saw my stretches. I shared with her the classes I had taken at Esalen. Right there in the office, after the last day of summer school three years ago, we moved to the ancient rhythm and discipline.

A few afternoons later, having stopped by Gilroy Community Services Department in the City Hall Offices behind the Gilroy Public Library, I was able to sign up for the class I desired.

If we remember loving archery at scout camp, or our sister finds she is a kid at heart determined to train for a triathlon, call 846-0460 and request info about a program. Classes are staggered throughout the year through December. Programs are grouped appropriately by age and ability.

Whether you are a four year old looking for a soccer recreational program, a 53-year old aiming to play soccer with mommy/daddy and me, or if you hope to move your wrist and hands simply and fluidly over a canvas with your new acrylics, there are all sorts of programs and classes for you. The Gilroy Community Services Department, at 7351 Rosanna Street, (behind the library) is the place to begin.

Contact your local Parks and Recreation or Community Services department to check out the listings and programs in your areas.

If you have news of an upcoming sports or activity program, feel free to contact Jeanmarie at [email protected].
