Who runs the site: The Web site was created by a hodgepodge of women journalists, activists and celebrities who run the site and write for it. Some of the participants include Lesley Stahl, Candice Bergen, Lily Tomlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Peggy Noonan and others.

According to the “About Us” section of the site, many of the women have known each other since early in their careers and have been friends who have talked about family, work and the world together.

Who is likely to use the site: The site is geared towards women, who to use the phrase the site creators use “weren’t born yesterday, who are in their prime, who are involved in the world and have a bent for changing it as much as living in it.”

Pros: The goal of the site is for the creators to share “conversations” they have with each other with readers so many of the postings read a little bit like a magazine interview. In one conversation Marlo Thomas, Jane Wagner and Joan Ganz Cooney talk about the economic meltdown, and if anything positive might come out of it.

The entries really read like a conversation, with the women talking about things they heard in the news or books they read that relate to the topic. At the end of each entry, users are referred to other conversations they may be interested in. They can also post comments if they sign up for a free user account.

The site has other features such as online polls, a question of the day, and a “Women in the News/Women on the News” feature where the writers comment on the latest things that are making people talk.

Cons: While most of the Web site is focused on politic and world news, it still has features that seem geared toward the superficiality they are trying to avoid such as the “Hair Day” weather forecast where registered users can find out if the local weather is good or bad for their hair.
