The San Benito boys golf team shot its best score of the season Thursday at the third Tri-County Athletic League Tournament, but finished a close runner-up to powerhouse Palma at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.
The Balers, led by a 1-under 35 from junior Will Cross, compiled a team score of 203 on Thursday, some five strokes lower than the team’s season best of 208, and 15 strokes better than its previous round of 218 on Monday at the Salinas Golf and Country Club.
“Much, much, much better,” San Benito head coach Chris Branon said of the score. “218 was the last match. So 203, we’re getting better.”
Senior Taylor Weatherly finished just behind Cross with a 37, while teammate Nathan Winn carded a 40. Jade Kimura’s 43 found the top five, and Darren Hopkins’ 48 rounded out the team’s scoring.
Dalton Destefanis shot a 49 for San Bento as well.
Palma, however, which was led by medalist Sergio Rios’ 2-under 34 and Matt Ogden’s 39, took first out of seven teams with a 195.
Everett Alvarez was third with a 217 and Salinas was fourth with 225. Gilroy (229), North Salinas (275) and Alisal (306) rounded out the scoring on Thursday.
Palma, San Benito and Everett Alvarez have finished in first, second and third place, respectively, in each of the first three TCAL Tournaments. Thursday’s round was held on holes 2-10 of the Gabilan Course at Ridgemark.
The Balers’ scheduled dual meet with Everett Alvarez on Monday was postponed and is expected to be made up at a later date. Meanwhile, San Benito will visit Gilroy on Wednesday for the fourth TCAL Tournament. Tee time is 3 p.m. at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course.
