Another big-name PGA Tour professional added his name to the growing 2011 Frys.com Open player field.
Eighteen-time Tour champion Ernie Els, the 41st ranked player on the Official World Golf Rankings, committed to the PGA’s Fall Series stop at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, tournament officials announced Tuesday.
Els’ resume consists of the 1994 and 1997 U.S. Opens and the 2000 British Open. He also holds 46 international victories and was a member of six International Presidents Cup teams.
In 2010, Els finished ninth in the FedEx Cup standings, posted two wins, the World Golf Championship-CA Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, and was elected to the 2011 class of the World Golf Hall of Fame.
This year, Els has played 20 events, recording five top-25 finishes, which places him 104th on the 2011 Money List. Also contributing to Els’ commitment is his relationship with SAP and its Founder and Chairman, Dr. Hasso Plattner, who owns CordeValle, according to an official press release.
Also committing to the field today are five-time PGA Tour winner Billy Mayfair and Jeff Maggert, a three-time PGA Tour winner and member of three U.S. Ryder Cup teams.
The Frys.com Open returns to CordeValle for the second straight year and runs from Oct. 5-9.
