There is one thing you can say regarding Eagle Ridge. When Johnny Miller and Ron Fream designed the course they spared no expense on sand. You will face almost every type of sand shot there is. The one shot that most of us rarely face and are the least adept at is the “fairway bunker.”

Where the fundamental goal of the “greenside bunker” shot is not to contact the ball first but the sand, with the “fairway bunker” shot the object is to hit the ball first not the sand. Most of the adjustments you need to make are directed to this end.

First, the lie must not be buried; the ball must be sitting on top of the sand. As to club selection, first choose the club that will clear the lip of the bunker. Then, if you are at 160 yards and your 160-yard club is your 5 iron take your 4 iron. Why? Because a fairway bunker shot does not allow for as much leg action as a normal shot so always take one more club.

Next stance – the lower body needs to support the upper body during the back swing so put the weight towards the inside of your feet. Dig deep into the sand, especially with your right foot. Then, if you dig 1 inch down choke down on your club 1 inch. Play the ball more towards the center of your stance to ensure you will hit the ball first. You need to “sweep” the ball out of the sand so make sure to finish your swing.

When I hit this shot I visualize that my ball is sitting on a sheet of ice and I don’t want to break the ice. Lastly, most people look at the back of the ball during their shots; with this shot, look at the front of the ball to assure you hit the ball before the sand.
