Keep your mind relaxed
There is no place on the golf course that can be more
frustrating and at the same time more rewarding than the putting
green. None of us (with a few exceptions) will hit it as far as
Tiger Woods. However, all of us have drained that impossible
30-foot putt just like Tiger. We have also missed that,
”
gimmy
”
two-footer, just like Tiger. No one is immune.

The biggest problem we face when we play is between our ears. How many times have you stood over a putt with all the verbal commands running through your head – head down, back and through the same distance, don’t look up and so on. I can guarantee you if you could go inside a tour player’s head while they putt, about all you would hear is the sound of one hand clapping. You can’t putt well if you are trying to tell yourself how to do it.
Try this the next time you play – after you have lined up your putt and have rehearsed the pace you want to swing the putter, address the ball and just tell yourself, “ball, hole” and putt it. Does anything else really matter when you’re putting? Don’t rush it; shut off all the commands and put the two things together that count. Golf doesn’t need to be complicated; we just make it that way.
