Two of the best golfers in the Tri-County Athletic League stayed hot Tuesday and got fine support from their teammates as the Hollister High boys golf team extended its league lead.

John Dempsey’s 1-under-par 35 paced the Balers to the win over Gilroy and Salinas high schools as Hollister shot a team score of 149, handily defeating Gilroy’s 161 and Salinas’ 164 on the Gavilan course at Ridgemark Golf & Country Club.

Zach Zgragen was one stroke off the lead with an even-par 36, while Ian Hudson and Chris Zubillaga each shot 39 for Hollister.

“John and Ian are in the top five in the league – probably 4 and 5,” Baler coach Mitch Thomas said. “They played great; we’ve been playing well. We’ve been practicing hard, and we had a good round. John, Ian and Zach have been pretty steady all year.”

Hollister’s depth was a key in Tuesday’s match. Daniel Rivera’s 40 and Matt Lopez’s 44 were not counted in the team scoring – the top four scores figure in the final total in each match – but Thomas said no opposing player broke 40 except for two Gilroy golfers who each shot 39.

The win pushed Hollister’s T-CAL lead one point in the league’s round-robin format. A team that wins a match is given one point while the second-place team gets two and the third-place team three, etc. Standings are determined by the lowest aggregate team score.

The Balers have five matches remaining before the league championships. Hollister next faces Salinas High and Live Oak Thursday at Corral de Tierra Country Club south of Salinas.
