Our first Red Phone caller of the week, a Hollister man, asked the Crimson Crusader if the city planned to put in more handicap ramps on the sidewalks along Sally Street in Hollister.

First-rate question, dear caller. The Crimson Crusader rang up David Rubcic, associate civil engineer for the city, to get the answer. Rubcic said a project is under way that will make several parts of Sally Street more pedestrian-friendly.

City crews will be working on Sally Street from Fourth Street to Seventh Street in the coming months. Included in the project is adding a handicap sidewalk ramp at the intersection of Sally and Sixth streets and reconstructing a handicap ramp on the west side of the intersection of Sally and Fourth streets, Rubcic said. Also included in the project is the construction of a new sidewalk along the east side of Sally from Fifth Street to Fourth Street.

Rubcic expects the project to be finished before its scheduled July 13 completion date. Until then, dearest caller, be content with the knowledge that Rubcic and city crews are hard at work on the project.

Watch your step

Our next Red Phone caller, a Hollister woman, asked the Crimson Crusader to see if something could be done about inconsiderate dog walkers in the Sunnyslope Village area. These dog owners weren’t picking up their pet’s droppings, our caller said.

The Crimson Crusader called Hollister Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless to see what could be done about these folks who aren’t picking up their share of pet waste. Chambless said city ordinance requires pet owners to clean up any and all waste created by their animals. Failure to do so can result in a citation and possible fine. Chambless also had some advice for watchful neighbors: Keep an eye on those who don’t pick up, record what time they usually walk their dog, and then pass that information along to animal control at 636-4320.

Eyesore on San Benito

Our next Red Phone caller, a Hollister woman, asked the Crimson Crusader to get the trash and graffiti behind Jessie’s Pizza and Arcade on San Benito Street in Hollister cleaned up.

The Crimson Crusader again called Chambless to report the problem. Chambless said he was aware of the graffiti and would be sending a letter to the property owner regarding that matter this week. He said he would also check on the trash problem and see what could be done.

Red Phone on Hold

After getting three Red Phone calls about potholes last week, the Crimson Crusader talked with Rubcic to see what paving projects are in the pipeline for summer.

Fortunately, two of the streets our callers complained about last week are on the city’s schedule for improvements. Suiter Street from A Street to Powell will be repaved sometime before June, Rubcic said. And the San Felipe frontage road from McCloskey Road to Fallon Road will be repaved sometime this summer, he said. Since the city is already planning to fix those potholes, we can take both items off the “on hold” list after a mere two days.
