In a world based on technological advancements, a high school diploma is absolutely necessary. It is not the school’s responsibility to make a diploma more meaningful since society has already taken over that role; it is San Benito County’s responsibility to enforce its importance.

The fact the San Benito High School Board of Trustees has decided to let those who have not passed the exit exam walk in the graduation ceremony is ridiculous. The exit exam is first taken during the sophomore year of high school. There is no excuse for a student to not pass a simple standardized test by their senior year. If students cannot pass a test like that, then they should not proceed to higher levels of education until they grasp the concepts of lower ones. Or they should seek extra help. As a junior at San Benito High School, I know for a fact that there are multiple opportunities for tutorials, which can help students better understand the material on the exam, allowing them to pass.

Passing the exit exam is a California state standard – a simple test to ensure the education of citizens. Without passing this exam, graduating from a California high school with a diploma is impossible. The graduation ceremony is a privilege to those who have earned their way through high school. Allowing that privilege to those who have not completely fulfilled their high school requirements is unfair to those who worked hard to be in a position to walk in the ceremony. By allowing this, our school essentially promotes laziness within academics.
