A Reel Story
– Local Angler Snags a Good One
CALLER 1: I work in the Hollister area and recently met a guy named Jason who is a pro bass fisherman. After speaking with him for quite awhile, I was pretty impressed. He is a heck of a nice guy and, as I found out, a heck of a good fisherman, too. He told me that he fishes the WON Bass tour, and had turned pro in 2006.

I decided to look him up at WON Bass.com and found out that he finished 12th in their Angler of the Year points race in his rookie season. I have been around tournament fishing for some time, and I can tell you that’s not easy to do, especially here in California. I would love to see a story about him, and I am sure other local anglers would to. Thanks.

GREEN PHONE: What a catch! We had no idea we had such a successful fisherman in our midst. We’re always interested in featuring outstanding accomplishments and that sounds like just the ticket. Thanks for the heads up, Caller One. We’ll try to reel Jason in for a story.

While we’re talking fishing, we’d love to see photos of our readers’ prize catches. We’ve brought the Catch of the Week back to the sports section and we encourage you to submit shots of the best of the best. As soon as you reel in a big one, smile for the camera and then zip the photo over to [email protected].

CALLER 2: I just wanted to comment on your sports page from this morning, July 13. That was a great article on the Canez and Klauers heading to San Jose State, but it would have been nice for you guys to cover the 11-12-year-old Hollister American All-Stars that were the last team that was in the playoffs for the All-Star teams.

There was no coverage the day before, or very minimal coverage, and there was no coverage yesterday. And I was expecting something in today’s paper at least to give the boys a little bit of uplifting. They did lose last night and so were the last team out. And unfortunately, there was nothing in the paper.

You know, I think this article on the Canez and Klauers, they’re always in the paper and its kind of unfortunate that all these other Little League teams don’t get any coverage. The Canez and Klauers could have waited another couple days for coverage to be put on the front page of the sports section. Like I said, it could have waited another couple days. That’s just my comment. Thanks.

GREEN PHONE: We’re glad you care, Caller Two. We’re always interested in what readers think of our sports sections. But we’re sorry that you exposed our lack of coverage of that game.

Simply put, you caught us at the tail end of a vacation rotation. Our beleaguered sports ‘department’ was just getting back to full strength, as it were, and was attempting to jump back into the fray as seamlessly as possible. Obviously, it didn’t work out as well as we had hoped. In an ideal world, we would have had full coverage of both the Little League action and the former ‘Balers’ college decision.

We’re glad you shared your thoughts on Breyon Canez and Karson Klauer, too. You aren’t alone in voicing frustration, Caller Two, although other readers have been more adamant that star ‘Balers, such as Canez and Klauer, get too much press. We try to strike a balance between covering noteworthy sporting events and following the area’s top athletes. With Canez and Klauer having recently completed high school and having become household names because of their athletic prowess, we wanted to alert the community as soon as possible of their college selection.

Back to our Little League coverage, there’s never a good time to take a vacation in this business, but ours fell smack in the middle of All-Star play. We hope you saw a substantial difference in the days following your call, Caller Two, and that you pick up the sports section the next few days as the 9-10s and 10-11s battle for section titles.
