CALLER 1: Hey, just callin’ about your reporting the baseball stats. You left them out of the paper a couple of times last week and today you left them out. You also left the schedule of tomorrow’s games out. You left out what teams won. And it’s disappointing. Very, very disappointing. Appreciate it if you wouldn’t do that. Thank you much. Bye bye.

GREEN PHONE: We were just getting ready to respond, Caller 1, but you called again!

CALLER 1: (again) I’d still like to see some stats in the sports page. What’s the matter. Can’t you guys get ’em or can’t print ’em? Or don’t you guys want to? Hey, that’s what we open the sports page for – to see the stats on that baseball program. C’mon, get with it. Please, please, please, please.

GREEN PHONE: Phew. We can tell you’re passionate about your sports page, Caller 1. We’re of the same breed when we’re reading sports sections, so thanks for weighing in. The bottom line is you’re right, Caller 1. You caught us on a few occasions when we had so many local things to put in our pages – prep previews and fall sports getting underway – that we bumped some of our national coverage, including the standings you love so much. With the pennant races in full swing in the majors, we can understand why you’re frustrated. We’ll make every effort to include the standings and as much national sports coverage as possible as we go forward.

A quick mission statement and a request as well: Our No. 1 goal is to give our readers sports content they can’t get anywhere else – the local stuff. As usual, we’re fielding inquiries about covering the high schools’ JV and freshmen teams. While our pages will continue to focus on varsity sports, we absolutely want to include the others as well. On that note, if you coach a JV or freshmen team and want to get your squad some ink, please give us a call if we haven’t reached you yet. Coaches, we welcome your help.
