The local Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts will be “Scouting for Food” for needy families Saturday.

The project, which will cover Hollister and San Juan Bautista, is aimed at replenishing food supplies for the Community Pantry, said John Wrobel, assistant scout master for Troop 400 out of Hollister.

The units will be out around 9 a.m., and they are asking people to put any food they want to donate at their front door to be picked up.

“We’ll pick up a can of peas or we’ll pick up industrial-sized cans of institutional type food,” Wrobel said. “As much or as little as anyone would like to donate.”

The troops, which have been conducting the community service project for several years, want to give back to the Community Pantry, which feeds the needy throughout the entire year.

After the Christmas season, the Pantry had a diminished supply of food – supply quotas the Scouts hope to restore with their work this weekend, Wrobel said.

“What we’d like to do is bring them back up to their normal level,” he said. “But it would be really cool if we could do more.”

While canned goods last longer and are easier to store, the Scouts will pick up anything left for them to take.

“We want what the Community Pantry wants,” Wrobel said.

More than 200 scouts will be out collecting food Saturday, but if they miss a house anyone who would like to participate by donating food can contact Wrobel at home throughout the weekend and he will make sure the food is picked up, he said.

The food collected this weekend will hopefully help the Pantry maintain its provisions for some time, Wrobel said.

“Our emphasis is once a year,” he said. “But the Pantry collects food all year long.”

To contact John Wrobel at home call (831) 637-3216, from Friday evening though the weekend.

To donate food directly to the Community Pantry call (831) 637-0340, or visit their office at 30-B Airport Drive in Hollister.
