Are we so desperate for news that we cannot even pick up the “small town” Hollister Freelance without being appalled by it?
A very graphic story about a crime against a young teenage girl in December 1st issue of the Freelance caused me to think again about reading the paper. We get enough horrific violence in our movies, television dramas and even video games. I can hardly turn on the morning news to watch the weather for all the murders, gang violence and crime reports that I have to mute when my children are in the room.
If you feel it is in the interest of the public to make us aware of such criminal activity to keep us alert, report the story, but PLEASE spare us the details. Such things are meant for police reports, but not necessary to share with the general public.
In these hard economic, political and tumultuous times we need a little GOOD news to read about from time to time. There are wonderful things happening here in Hollister, organizations doing good deeds, churches and civic organizations helping out those less fortunate; find something to bring a little glimmer of hope in this world of crime that you report to us so faithfully. How about an entire issue dedicated to nothing but good news and interesting photos from readers? I wonder how many people would buy that paper!
