Anzar boys soccer hold 2-0-1 league record, Pacific Grove
looms
Santa Cruz – The Anzar boys soccer team played to a 2-2 tie Tuesday at Pacific Collegiate, and remain undefeated in the Coastal Athletic League with a 2-0-1 record.
“The team is doing well this year,” coach Ruben Fuentes said of his soccer squad, which carries a 2-1-1 overall record. “I believe this is the best season they’ve had probably ever, as of right now anyway. The kids are beginning to believe in themselves.”
Alex Sanchez and Joel Gutierrez scored in the 2nd and 27th minutes for Anzar Tuesday, as the Hawks took a narrow 2-1 lead to halftime.
But Ken Bowers managed to tie the game 2-2 in the 41st minute, and the score remained the same until the end of regulation.
“Home field advantage went to the home team,” Fuentes said.
The Hawks got a late start to the season when they opened the year with a 6-0 loss to Monte Vista Christian on Nov. 21. Since then, however, Anzar has scored a 3-0 win at Calvary Christian and a 17-0 drubbing at home to Marina.
Tuesday’s tie against Pacific Collegiate positions the Hawks in second place in the CAL, and sets up Thursday’s game at Pacific Grove, which enters with a perfect 3-0 record in the league.
“They are capable of winning and competing. Anytime you can start with two wins … that’s gonna build you up,” Fuentes said of his team. “We’re gonna play them hard, aggressive … If we work as a team, we’ll win as a team.”
To date, Anzar has outscored their opponents 22-8 through four games.
Anzar will play at Pacific Grove Thursday. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m.
