Chamberlain’s Children Center, with the support of three organizations, had a successful work day April 30, on Chamberlain’s campus at 1850 San Benito St., in Hollister. The three groups, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Leadership San Benito and Rotary District 5170 Area 6, sent more than 200 volunteers and completed 19 campus projects.

Completed projects included painting of the school house, Health and Wellness Center and office buildings, roofing, paving, laying tile in the kitchen of the Health and Wellness Center, building garden boxes, planting landscape shrubs, and filling the playground with new recycled material.

“Though we have had a number of work days in the past two years Saturdays’ event topped them all,” said Robert Freiri, the executive director, of Chamberlain’s, in a press release. “We are especially grateful for the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints leadership for providing us with professional contractors to lead crews and supply equipment and materials.”

Freiri added, “We were also grateful to the 42 Rotary members from five clubs, including Hollister and San Juan Bautista, for building much needed planter boxes and fences.”

Freiri said that Leadership San Benito has taken on the renovation of the Wellness Center Kitchen as one if its projects this year.

“Members of this year’s Leadership class have raised funds and secured in-kind donations to build a wonderful kitchen,” he said.

Freiri wanted to thank, on behalf of Chamberlain’s, the businesses that donated or offered discounts, including: Rotary International Foundation, Recology South Valley, Starkweather Painting, Pacific Interlock, Whiteside Construction, West Coast Rubber Recycling, McKinnon Lumber, Ace Hardware, Emser Tile, Hollister Rotary BBQ Crew and Leadership San Benito County.

The Mormon church volunteers participated as part of the “Helping Hands” inititative. In California, members of the church volunteered thousands of hours, talents and resources to annual Mormon Helping Hands projects up and down the state. Working to identify community needs, working with local leaders, members of the Church donned their distinctive yellow Helping Hands vests and t-shirts and went to work to improve the communities in which they live.
