Even without their manager, the Hollister 11-year-old All-Star team still almost found a way to win the Section 5 tournament in Hollister Wednesday.

Lincoln Glen scored seven runs in the second inning and was able to win 12-8 to claim the championship banner and eliminate Hollister from tournament play. Even though Hollister started out flat, the team was still able to rally back.

Lincoln Glen jumped out to a 9-1 lead after the first two innings, but Hollister battled back.

Conner Stevens hit a shot up the middle in the second inning then scored on a groundout with a close play at the plate.

In the third inning, Jake Hunter had a single to the right field wall to bring in a run, and another run scored on a fielder’s choice to make the score 11-4.

Ryan Jimenez started off the fourth with a base hit. Andre Lucas hit a ball deep that right fielder dived for. The ball glanced off his glove, and Lucas, hustling all the way, made it around the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

After Kallin Corotto reached on an error and Eddie Vargas had an opposite-field base hit, Lincoln Glen turned a double play to get out the inning. The first baseman picked up an unassisted putout at first then fired home for the second out.

Hollister got its final two runs in the fifth inning. After Mark Nakata reached on an infield hit, Nick Hernandez hit a double to the wall. And Lucas had a single.

11-12

The Hollister 11-12 All-Star team was defeated 6-2 Wednesday night by Lincoln Glen and was eliminated from the Section 5 tournament in Santa Clara.

“We came out a little flat defensively,” said manager Steve Gessell. “But I still think we had the best team out there.”

In the fourth inning, Hollister (8-3) had the chance to tie the game at 3-3.

Bryan Granger led off the inning with a double. He came home on what appeared to be a passed ball when Tyler Provost was batting, but the umpire said it hit his bat and Granger wasn’t able to score.

Lincoln Glen then came right back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hollister had two runners on in the final inning but couldn’t get them across.

In the third inning, Trevor Gessell and Trevor Fabing both had singles, and Kyle Zozaya, who was 2-for-2, hit a double down the line to bring in the runs.

Kyle Vallejo pitched all five innings for Hollister.
