A 20-year-old Hollister man died in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday night in Gilroy when a car he was riding in crashed into a tree, according to the Gilroy Police Department.
The vehicle’s driver, a 19-year-old man also from Hollister, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to a GPD press release.
Gilroy police and fire personnel responded to a 911 call of a major-injury collision around 11:19 p.m. in the 7900 block of Arroyo Circle, according to the release.
When crews arrived, they found that the vehicle had collided with a tree and the car’s occupants had sustained life-threatening injuries, police said.
The driver had to be extricated from the vehicle by fire department personnel. The driver and passenger were transported via air ambulance to Bay Area trauma hospitals for their injuries. The passenger succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff, according to GPD.
His name has been withheld pending notification of his next of kin.
The factors leading to the cause of the collision are currently under investigation. Police are still trying to determine what caused the collision, and if alcohol or other intoxicants may have contributed to the collision, according to GPD.
The investigation is currently being handled by the GPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team.
