Police arrested a Sacramento-area man who allegedly vandalized a City of Hollister vehicle by using an explosive device, authorities said.

On July 5, Hollister Police responded to 375 Fourth Street on a report of vandalism to a city-owned vehicle, Hollister Police Department said in a press release. An unknown suspect had placed and detonated an explosive device on the car, resulting in extensive damage.

Police said the damage was consistent with a large explosion, possibly from a large illegal fireworks device. The explosion destroyed the cowl area, hood, front fender, windshield and components in the engine area of the vehicle.

The cost to repair the damage would be more than $10,000, police said. The vehicle was placed out of commission due to the damages.

Detectives investigated the incident and obtained information that led to the suspect’s identity—with the assistance of city-owned surveillance cameras, police said.

On Oct. 14, an officer contacted the suspect in relation to another case. Officers arrested the suspect, Carlos Bravo Casarez, 41, on suspicion of felony vandalism and possession of a destructive device or explosive, authorities said.

Casarez is a resident of Sacramento County who has ties in Hollister, police said.
