After the final gun sounded Saturday at Andy Hardin Field, the Hollister JPW Vikings still haven’t been scored upon this season.

Andre Cornell took care of putting a stop to the Longhorn’s scoreless string in the first half. When Cambrian Valley punted after their first possession, he returned it 52 yards for the game’s first score. Of course they still hadn’t allowed a defensive touchdown after the return, but Cornell took care of that detail too, dashing 62 yards to paydirt behind the blocking of a great offensive line which includes Ricky Rodriguez, Tyler Pina, Jared Lantis, Conner Stevens and Austin Blake.

But in the second half, the Vikings began to open up the Longhorn defense, as strong blocking by the “gold line” of Daniel Gutierrez, Timothy Vivian, James Flook, Kristopher Sosa, Angel Mendoza and Cole Benitez set up several good gains by running backs Justin Raine and Mark Neal. Those runs paved the way for another Cornell burst of 34 yards on the power sweep for the Vikings third touchdown.

Adolfo Davila took over at halfback in the fourth quarter and broke several good runs, completing the Vikings scoring with a one-yard plunge.

Defensively, Hollister completely dominated their opponent from start to finish, rarely allowing a first down. Ricky Rodriguez, Isaak Ramos and Pina spearheaded the defensive effort with a multitude of tackles for a loss. Ramos had an interception in the third quarter and Mikey Soto picked off a pass early for Hollister’s first big defensive play. Ryan Disalvo recovered a fumble late in the game.

The first half of the game was a defensive struggle. Hollister kept the ball most of the time thanks to two fumble recoveries, one by Kyle Vallejo and the other by Alex Mottau.

Hollister’s defense scored the first points of the game when defensive tackle Bryan Garza brought down a Longhorn runner in the end zone for a safety. Cambrian Valley kept Hollister out of the end zone after a short kick, but the next series found Cambrian Valley backed up to its end zone again.

This time Garza and Michael Murphy rushed the Longhorn punter, sacking him on the four to set up first and goal. Trevor Fabing carried it in from the one two plays later. Murphy added what would be the first of three two-point conversion kicks on the day. The Vikings extended their lead on the first play of the third quarter when Armando Lerma broke loose for a 49-yard touchdown run. Hollister’s offense continued to roll throughout the second half, with Murphy, Ryan Shorey and Adrian Melendez all contributing several productive runs. Late in the third quarter, the Vikings put the game away when Fabing threw a 34-yard strike to Brandon Pina for another Viking touchdown.

The shutout was a team effort on the part of the defense, with Vallejo and Taylor Green having particularly good days, stopping most runs in the backfield. Pina also made a big stop on fourth down by tackling a Longhorn runner in open field.

Cambrian Valley Longhorns 12

The Hollister JM’s were fit to be tied for a second week in a row as they locked horns, so to speak, in a defensive struggle with an equally matched opponent.

The Vikings offense got off to a quick start when quarterback David Demateo completed a couple of passes to Anthony Padilla. Halfback Austin Schmidt caught a touchdown pass from Al Reyes.

Cambrian Valley was able to tie the game a few minutes later, but from that point, Hollister’s defense took over, smothering the Longhorn attack no matter what direction they turned. Eric Sanders in particular made life difficult for the Longhorns, stopping several runs on both sides of the field. Herman Valderamma and Ryan Wiltse also wreaked havoc on the Cambrian Valley running attack.

In the third quarter, Hollister scored again on a 20-yard run by Reyes. It looked like the 12-6 lead might just hold up, especially after Bobby Dennehy stepped in front of a Longhorn pass on the next series, and the Longhorns found themselves backed up on their own six yard line early in the fourth quarter. But Cambrian Valley turned the game around on that play as their halfback broke outside for a 94-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 12-12.

Hollister Midgets Cowboys 7

The defending Peninsula Midget D2 champions rolled into town on Saturday night and showed why they just might repeat as titlists again this year.

Despite the rout, the Cowboys had a few bright moments. Jamie Driskill had a 75 yard kickoff return for a touchdown to get Hollister on the board, and Abel Jacquez added a one yard conversion run. Nathan Hopkins, Scott Reilly and Miles Sanchez each made several good defensive plays to stop Longhorn drives.

-The Mitey Mite Vikings also took on Cambrian Valley, and both teams moved the ball well all game. Cody Cameron got the ball rolling early for Hollister with a 20-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, and gained over 100 yards rushing in the game. Eddie Munoz made a run to the end zone and also recovered a fumble on the kickoff. That play was called back, but John Hartshorn recovered an onside kick for Hollister on the next play. Taylor Dukes also had two long runs of 65 and 38 yards. Most promising for the young Vikings, however, was the development of the passing game. Quarterback Danny Buzzetta completed three passes, one to Dukes and two to wingback Austin Wahl. Wahl also had several good reverse runs for Hollister. In a game dominated by both offenses, the defense had one big moment when Michael Inderbitzen forced a fumble with a big hit, and Austin Ledesma recovered for Hollister.

Jonathan Roach also recovered a fumble for the Vikings.

The Hollister teams take their game on the road for the next two weeks, with contests scheduled against Los Gatos, Morgan Hill and Santa Teresa. Check the Hollister Youth Football website for specific game times and directions: http://www.eteamz.com/HollisterPopWarner/.
