Hollister School District officials have initiated a new campaign recruiting members of the public to participate in submitting names and selecting the mascot for the district’s new elementary school.
The kindergarten through fifth grade primary school, located at the northeast corner of Fairview and Sunnyslope Roads, is scheduled to begin construction in Spring 2019, according to staff.
The campaign for naming the school and selecting the mascot will run until March 31. Nominations can be submitted online through hesd.org.
HSD’s Board of Education has designated a Citizens’ Advisory Committee to coordinate all the information submitted and report to the Board of Education at the April 23 meeting. At that time, the board will consider the information and may approve a name and mascot for the new school, according to staff.
Administrators receive top honors
San Benito High School Principal Adrian Ramirez was selected as the Association of California School Administrators Region 10 Secondary Principal of the Year, according to a recent announcement.
Additionally, Melissa Casas, San Benito High School District’s coordinator of special education, was named the ACSA Region 10 Special Education Administrator of the Year.
Supt. Shawn Tennenbaum said it was a privilege to work closely with Ramirez, whom he said “strives each day to create a learning and working environment that fosters growth, supports innovation, and pursues the highest of standards for students and staff.”
Director of Special Education Dr. Paulette Cobb complimented Casas on her “deep commitment to students,” particularly within her expertise of social emotional supports.
“Her work in programs for students with emotional disabilities has been remarkable,” Cobb said. “There is no project she leaves unfinished as she works and advocates for all students at San Benito High School.” Cobb said.
A quartet of San Benito County Office of Education employees also were recently named Administrator of the Year honorees from the Association of California School Administrators.
Shannon Hansen (Business Services), Jennifer Logue (Curriculum and Instruction), Roy Sims- Technology and Rose Coronado (Personnel/Human Resources) were all named best in their respective concentrations for ACSA Region 10, which consists of districts in San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.
Support-A-Student gets $1k
Ken Moeller, the president of Arch Pac Aquatics, the architectural firm that designed the pools in the San Benito High School aquatics center, has donated $1,000 to the district’s Support-A-Student program.
Moeller’s donation follows the recent $2,000 donation by Myrtha Pools toward the program, which begins with a goal to raise $25,000 to help students with costs associated with the college application and visit process as well as Advanced Placement exams.
SBHS District Superintendent Dr. Shawn Tennenbaum said Moeller “has been a great team member” on the aquatics center project.
“He has provided incredible expertise. His work with public pools in the state of California is well-renowned,” Tennenbaum said. “He is a big advocate of public schools and making sure students have state-of-the-art aquatics facilities.”

Student Art Exhibition
San Benito High School arts and ceramics teacher Christina Ross and staff will host an opening reception for the Spring 2019 Student Artist Exhibition.
The reception is scheduled from 12:45pm to 1:30pm March 19. Refreshments will be served, with sweet treats made by SBHS culinary students, in Room 172.
“We would love to get the community of San Benito County to come enjoy this event,” Ross said.
Caltrans scholarships
Caltrans District 5 and the California Transportation Foundation have set up two $1,000 scholarships for high school seniors within its five-county district, which includes San Benito County.
The scholarship program is designed for college-bound seniors who are planning to pursue a career in transportation and live within the five counties of the district.
Applications must be submitted by April 30. The 2019 scholarships will be awarded this summer to high school seniors from the Central Coast.

Latino student scholarships
The Community Foundation for San Benito County announced the availability of scholarships for Latino high school and college students who reside in San Benito County.
Scholarships are awarded to Latino students who possess an economic need and are available to high school seniors with plans to continue their post-secondary education by attending a four-year college or university, community college, or certified vocational training institution. College students who are already enrolled are also eligible for this scholarship program.
Applications must be completed and submitted to the Community Foundation office by March 29.
