Coastal Kids Home Care, based in Salinas, received a $150,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Monterey County, the Futer Essential Human Services Grant, to provide nursing care for children from newborn to 21.
The nonprofit serves families in Monterey, San Benito, Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties.
“We’ve been serving the children and families in and around Monterey County for seven years now, and we’ve grown a lot,” said Margy Mayfield, the executive director and co-founder of Coastal Kids. “This prestigious award will help us to hire the staff we need to increase our financial support system in the community and create a strategic plan – something we haven’t had the funds to do in the past.”
The agency is the sole provider of pediatric home health services on the Central Coast and the only nonprofit pediatric home care agency in the state. It offers nursing support for medically fragile infants, medical care for children with short-term injuries or illness, physical and occupational therapy for kids with cognitive and physical disabilities, and medical care for children living with serious medical conditions such as brain tumors and cancer. It also provides hospice care for children and is the only agency in Monterey County to provide the service.
Since 2005, the agency has provided care for 3,700 children. Seventy-five percent of the families served are low-income and many receive health benefits through Medi-Cal.
