Police are looking for Jose Angel Garcia, 26, of Hollister because the bomb was found in his car on the 1100 block of Central Avenue at 1:15 a.m.
Officers found the bomb, described as two cylindrical objects taped together with a fuse coming out of the tips, Interim Police Chief Larry Todd said in a written statement.
Police found the bomb after they were called out to a possible domestic violence incident after Garcia had reportedly battered his girlfriend, police said. When they could not find the suspect, officers reportedly saw the homemade bomb sitting in the center console of the car.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad was called in to first identify the bomb and then remove it from the car.
At about 6:30 a.m., the bomb squad removed the explosive device from the car and transported it to an open field next to Calaveras School and exploded the device, police said.
Garcia, who investigators believe made the bomb, is the same person who had police and sheriff’s deputies at bay in a four-hour stand-off on July 10.
