“Honey”, the young Gopher Snake that came to WERC in January
with wounds on her head and mouth has finally been released! Her
wounds healed very well with applications of honey and antibiotic
injections.
“Honey”, the young Gopher Snake that came to WERC in January with wounds on her head and mouth has finally been released! Her wounds healed very well with applications of honey and antibiotic injections. After her split upper jaw had mended (and she no longer could flick her forked tongue through the gap), she was able to capture and eat live mice. She grew bigger (doubling in length from 21″ to 3-1/2 feet) and healthier on this TLC and went through 3 sheds of her snakeskin.
Having “grown up” in a terrarium for 6 months, she was cautious when first placed in the grass of a hillside (where gophers are known to be abundant!), but soon slithered away and hid under a log, where she can take her time adjusting to the new surroundings before searching for a meal of small rodents or maybe some large, juicy insects.
