John Wiley scored 19 points and Monte Vista Christian used a pressure defense to beat the Anzar High boys basketball ball team 46-29 on Wednesday night in San Juan Bautista.

Andres Gomez scored 10 points to lead the Hawks, who fall to 0-3 on the early season.

Earlier this week, Anzar lost 71-34 to Harker and 67-29 to St. Francis of Watsonville. Gomez led the Hawks in both games with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

On Wednesday, the Hawks stayed close to Monte Vista Christian, trailing 15-10 after one quarter and 24-16 at halftime. But the Mustangs upped the pressure in the second half.

“They pressured us the whole game,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said. “We dealt with it OK in the first quarter, and then they just wore us down and it got away from us.”

Monte Vista Christian outscored Anzar 17-9 in the fourth quarter.

“Turnovers killed us in the second half,” Cecena said.

Johnny Doty provided six points for the Hawks, while Devon Parish added five.

Anzar will return to action Friday when it hosts Latino College Prep at 6 p.m., in San Juan Bautista. On Saturday, the Hawks will host Downtown College Prep at 3 p.m.
