Kelsey Robledo scored 13 points, both Erin Glasspool and Cyrena Salinas added seven, and the San Benito girls basketball team opened the 2010-11 season with a 42-25 victory over visiting North Monterey County on Wednesday night at Hollister’s Mattson Gym.

While the offensive production is in need of improvement, San Benito head coach David Kaplansky was pleased with the defensive effort in the first game of the season.

“I felt, for the first game, we did a good job,” Kaplansky said. “For our first game, we were ahead of last year defensively.”

At times, the Balers (1-0) did have a hard time getting the ball to drop, but the defensive effort was consistent throughout the contest, which saw San Benito lead 11-4 at the end of the first quarter, 19-8 at halftime.

Ellie Burley and Mari Vallejo, fresh off volleyball season, scored six points each for the Balers, while Nicole Rianda chimed in with three points.

San Benito will play next at Seaside on Friday. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
