SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
Andres Gomez scored 18, Mark Rania added 17, and the Anzar Hawks snapped a six-game losing streak Wednesday when they dispatched visiting Oakwood 65-15 in the Coastal Athletic League opener in San Juan Bautista.
The Hawks are now 1-0 in the CAL, 3-12 overall.
“All the practice sessions, it’s starting to rub off on them a little bit,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said.
Cecena’s initial plan was to utilize the size of Gomez and Rania in the paint, and at least against Oakwood Wednesday, the opposition had few answers for the Hawks’ tandem inside.
“They pretty much had their way inside,” Cecena said.
And outside.
While Gomez had eight field goals, Rania drained three 3-pointers to go along with three jumpers from inside the arc.
“We just kept feeding them the ball,” Cecena said. “We got contributions from everybody and we showed some improvement.”
Anzar was never threatened in the contest, leading 21-5 after one quarter and 40-11 at halftime.
Niko Hebert had eight points for Anzar, while Daniel Ornelas, Alex Valles and Devon Parish chimed in with six points apiece.
The Hawks will now try their hand against Pacific Collegiate on Friday night in Santa Cruz. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
