In a game of momentum swings, the Anzar Hawks shot 11 of 12 from the free-throw line and staved off York late in a 41-29 victory in Coastal Athletic League action on Thursday night.

Alex Valles and Andres Gomez each contributed nine points for Anzar, which improves to 3-2 in the CAL and 5-14 overall.

York’s Edgar Daniel led all scorers with 10 points.

After a low-scoring first half, in which the Hawks led 8-4 after one quarter and 12-5 at halftime — “Nothing went down for us,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said — momentum began to shift between the teams leading to a back-and-forth second half.

“They got the momentum and started knocking down some shots,” Cecena said of York, which outscored Anzar 18-12 in the third quarter.

York trailed the Hawks 24-23 entering the final period.

“But then the momentum swung back to us,” the head coach added.

With one of their better free-throw performances of the season, the Hawks were 11 of 12 from the charity stripe and outscored York 17-6 in the final eight minutes of play to seal the win.

“That was the difference,” Cecena said of his team’s ability at the free-throw line on Thursday.

Anzar will begin the second half of its CAL schedule next Friday at Oakwood. Tip-off is 4:30 p.m.
