The Gavilan College basketball team has had some tough games this season, but perhaps none were as disappointing as Friday night’s 56-51 loss to visiting Monterey Peninsula College.

After splitting their first two games against each other, the teams knew each other well. Although the Rams (6-17, 1-8) jumped out to an early lead thanks in part to their 3-point shooting, they were forced to play catch-up for most of the game, never too far behind but never able to get the timely bucket to fall.

“You won’t win any game when you shoot like that,” Gavilan coach Tito Addison said. “The guys did the jobs they were supposed to do in the first, even though they still missed some shots. They started taking the first shot they saw. The biggest momentum killer is missing layups and free throws.”

The Rams, who were down 33-29 at the half, were 3 of 16 from the 3-point line in the second half.

Gavilan got within 48-46 with about five minutes to go after back-to-back buckets by Arron Mollet, who led the Rams with 12 points. Jordan Ramirez had 10 points, and Nicholas Strauthers had seven. MPC’s Alex Brandon led all scorers with 24.

Colton Alvers hit a 3-pointer with six seconds to go to get the Rams within 54-51, but the Lobos made a pair of free throws to seal the game.

MPC (14-11, 4-5) was 20 of 26 from the charity stripe, while the Rams were 4 of 10.

The lone highlight of the game was the Rams’ defense led by big man Devin Windham, who had several blocks and rebounds.

“We know we can stay with the teams in our league, but we’ve got to get to the point where they come in trying to stay with us,” Addison said.
