With a pair of losses in the Mendocino Tournament in Ukiah, the Gavilan women’s basketball team fell to 0-5 in the young season.
The Rams struggled with offense, shooting below 30 percent in the tournament, in losses to Lassen and Feather River colleges.
Despite 10 points from Vanessa Wilkins, the Rams opened the tournament with a 66-46 loss to Lassen. The Rams could never find an offensive rhythm shooting 25 percent from the field and 50 percent from the free throw line.
“They battled,” head coach Erik Nelson said. “We just couldn’t make our opponent shots at the basket. They are still finding each other. With each repetition, we should better with more chemistry.”
The Rams have only played three games with a full team because of injuries and three starting players finishing their season on the volleyball team.
“They are still learning to play with each other,” Nelson said.
Wilkins, though, played well grabbing 12 rebounds and four assists to go with her 10 points. Andreinna Casteneda scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds in the loss.
Off the bench, Breanna Hernandez scored nine for the Rams.
Offensive inconsistency, though, carried over to Saturday. In a 57-33 loss to Feather River, the Rams shot below 30 percent and finished with no players in double digits.
“We played very strong on defense – holding them under 60 points,” Nelson said. “On defense we battled again.”
Vanessa Wilkins finished with a team-high seven points and 12 rebounds in the loss. Wilkins also contributed four assist and three steals.
Eva Latu and Hernandez each added six points.
The Rams season continues Tuesday against Monterey Peninsula College at 5:30 p.m. in Monterey.
