After sweeping three games at the Watsonville Tournament during the winter break, the San Benito High School freshman boys’ basketball team finished its preseason with an 11-1 record, the only blemish being a loss to a junior varsity team in a tournament championship game.
The Balers have since defeated both North Salinas and Gilroy in Tri-County Athletic League play as well, and are currently 13-1.
After a convincing 56-11 victory over Gonzales to start the year, the team went 2-1 at the Santa Clara Frosh-Soph Tournament, losing to Palo Alto High School’s JV team in the title game, before rattling off 10 consecutive wins.
The Balers beat TCAL rivals Salinas, Gilroy and Palma to win the Alisal Tournament, then defeated Watsonville and Seaside before heading to the Watsonville tourney during the recently completed school break.
Against St. Francis Central Coast Catholic of Watsonville in Game 1, 12 of San Benito’s 14 players scored in a 59-26 victory. R.J. Collins led the way with 12 points. In a contest with Santa Cruz, which the Balers won 61-47, Tony Diaz paced the team with 15 points and 10 other players made the scoring column.
In the final game, against King City, Diaz and Andrew Breen each scored 10 points and 12 Balers scored in a decisive 55-6 victory, in which the Mustangs did not score in the second half.
San Benito is back in action Wednesday when it will visit Palma for a TCAL matchup at 4 p.m.
