After struggling offensively against Westmont last Wednesday, the San Benito girls basketball team returned to the court Monday afternoon and rebounded with a strong 54-17 victory over Silver Creek to kickoff the Dons Club Holiday Tournament in San Jose.

Kelsey Robledo put in 17 points to lead the Balers, who improve to 7-3 overall this season. Meanwhile, Erin Glasspool and Ellie Burley each had nine points apiece, while Cyrena Salinas added seven points in the game, which was held at Del Mar High.

“It was a great third quarter. The kids shot the ball well and our defense was outstanding all game,” San Benito head coach David Kaplansky said.

After controlling leads of 11-3 at the end of the first quarter and 21-10 at halftime, the Balers opened up a commanding lead in the third quarter when they outscored Silver Creek by a 20-4 margin.

As a result, San Benito was ahead 41-14 entering the final period.

“The kids did a good job of putting the ball in the hoop and were more aggressive getting to the foul line,” Kaplansky added.

With 20 field goals and two 3-pointers, the Balers were also 8 of 15 from the free-throw line in the game.

Meanwhile, San Benito’s slate this year in the Del Mar holiday tourney is shaping up rather similarly to last season’s run through the Central Coast Section Division I Championships.

San Benito opened the postseason last year with a 65-40 victory over Silver Creek, and advanced to the quarterfinal round to play Santa Teresa as a result.

With Monday’s win against Silver Creek in San Jose, though, San Benito will now play Santa Teresa in the semifinal round of the Dons Club Holiday Tournament on Wednesday night — much like the team’s opening rounds of last year’s playoffs.

The two teams will tip-off at 6 p.m. at Del Mar High in San Jose.
