Kelsey Robledo had 18 points, Erin Glasspool added 14, and the San Benito girls basketball team took an lead early against Seaside Friday night and never looked back en route to a comfortable 62-34 victory.
Nicole Rianda added 10 points for San Benito, which controlled a 24-9 lead after the first quarter, 33-11 at halftime. Meanwhile, the Balers limited host Seaside to single-digit point totals in the first two quarters, in what head coach David Kaplansky called a complete game.
“We had a great first quarter and that set the tone for tonight,” Kaplansky said.
After defeating North Monterey County 42-25 on Wednesday, the Balers spent Thursday’s practice working on offense, and it showed early on against Seaside (2-1).
The Balers went to their bigs early in the game, finding post players Robledo and Rianda for easy baskets and capitalizing on Seaside’s man defense.
But once the Spartans switched to a zone, San Benito simply moved its offense out toward the perimeter, where Glasspool and teammate Cyrena Salinas connected on three 3-pointers.
Salinas finished with six points.
“We looked in first, then we moved the ball out to the perimeter,” Kaplansky said. “And our girls did a nice job knocking down perimeter shots. It was a complete game.”
Seaside switched its defense a third time, moving into a 1-3-1, but the Balers didn’t slow down offensively. They outscored the Spartans 28-23 in the second half.
“They kept changing defenses, but we kept finding holes,” Kaplansky said. “Glasspool and Robledo really played well tonight.”
Mari Vallejo had eight points for San Benito, which improves to 2-0 on the early season.
It is the Balers’ fourth straight victory over Seaside. The two teams have met for a non-conference game the last five years, although the Spartans haven’t defeated San Benito since November 2006.
The Balers will now focus their attention on the Watsonville Wildcatz Invitational, a tournament they won last season by going 3-0 and defeating Sacramento’s El Camino Fundamental High in the championship match.
San Benito will open the tournament on Thursday against Gilroy’s Christopher High. Tip-off is 5 p.m.
