A slow start by the Anzar girls basketball team was enough for Soledad on Tuesday night, when the host Aztecs defeated the Hawks 43-16 in non-conference action.

It was the second game in a row between the two teams. On Dec. 17, Soledad beat Anzar 61-27 in San Juan Bautista.

“They’re a pretty good team,” Anzar head coach Mike Bonomi said simply.

The Hawks were held scoreless in the first quarter, and Soledad jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the opening period as a result, 20-4 at halftime.

“Nothing was going in,” Bonomi said. “We had a couple of good looks … just didn’t make them.”

Anzar’s Kelsey Robledo led the Hawks with 12 points and six rebounds, while Delaney McKinney had two points, two rebounds and three blocks.

Jacqueline Queresma also had two points for Anzar, which falls to 2-7 overall.

The Hawks will open Coastal Athletic League play next. Anzar will host Oakwood on Jan. 6 in San Juan Bautista at 5:30 p.m.
