Melissa Weckerle scored 22 points, Kelsey Robledo tacked on 20 more, and the Anzar High girls basketball team improved to 2-0 on the early season when it defeated Saint Lawrence Academy 49-31 on Thursday night in San Juan Bautista.

“That’s definitely a positive indicator,” said Anzar head coach Aaron Netzel, whose Hawks lost to the private Santa Clara school by a 46-23 margin one year ago. “We’re getting better everyday.”

And at 2-0, the Hawks have already improved upon last season’s non-conference record, which saw Anzar open the season with a 1-9 mark.

“It was a big step forward,” Netzel said.

Weckerle and Robledo have certainly been leading the way for the Hawks. The guard-post combo have combined for 80 of Anzar’s 91 points scored this season, and each provided double-digit scoring on Thursday night.

Robledo had nine rebounds to go along with her 20 points, while Weckerle had a double-double performance with 10 steals and 22 points.

“She was just unstoppable, just carving in and out of their defense,” Netzel said. “Kelsey actually got off to a little bit of a slow start, but I’m not complaining.”

The Hawks opened the game with a full-court press, but Saint Lawrence managed to stay close, trailing 18-11 after one quarter.

“We went to the half-court for the rest of the game,” Netzel said. “It was pretty effective.”

Anzar held Saint Lawrence to single-digit point totals in the second, third and fourth quarters.

“Their stamina really took a hit as the game went on,” Netzel said.

The Hawks will need their stamina next week with four games scheduled, including contests at home to Pajaro Valley, Carmel and Live Oak, with one road game against Greenfield.

Anzar will begin the week on Monday, when it hosts Pajaro in San Juan Bautista at 6:30 p.m.
