Literacy program to hold tutor training

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Free Library’s Adult Literacy Training Program will conduct a tutor training session Saturday, Nov. 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the library’s Barbara Memorial Room at 470 5th St. The program will take an in-depth look at the art of one-on-one literacy tutoring and give a comprehensive introduction to the materials and online resources available. Attendees are asked to bring bag lunches for the mid-day break. Beverages and dessert will be provided.

Arts Council granted nonprofit status

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Arts Council has been recognized as a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization retroactive to Jan. 19, 2006. The agency’s motto is to promote, encourage and provide access to the arts to all residents of the county.

With the status, donations to the Council are tax-exempt.

“Achieving this status will greatly enhance our ability to raise the funds we need to support local arts organizations and artists,” said Council President Cesar Flores, “As well as provide access to the arts for all residents…”

The Council members will also be able to apply for grant funding from a number of large private foundations.

Grad Night fund-raiser

HOLLISTER – The San Benito High School Sober Grad Night committee will hold a fund-raising event at Baskin Robbins Ice Cream and Papa Murphy’s Pizza on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. These businesses will donate a percentage of all sales from regularly priced ice cream and pizza items to the Sober Grad Night event to be held in June. Coupons are required and can be obtained at the door on the day of the event.

Raise money for St. Jude’s

HOLLISTER – A workout event benefiting St. Jude Children’s Hospital Research will be held at Healthy Inspirations of Hollister on Saturday, Nov. 3. All funds raised will go to St. Jude for help in its ongoing fight against childhood cancer and other diseases. Persons interested in participating or in making a donation should call Blanca Shackelford at 637-3808.

CASA looking for volunteers

HOLLISTER – CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) of San Benito County is looking for adults to volunteer as advocates for abused children. Volunteers, after extensive training, will work collaboratively with social workers, lawyers, foster parents and the judge presiding over a case to make sure the best interests of the child are served.

An informational meeting for interested volunteers will be held on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. at the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce. For more information, call 455-6800 or go to www.casasanbenito.org.

Crafters needed

HOLLISTER – The Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 9242 is looking for crafters to participate in the organization’s annual Holiday Craft Show, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St. A fee of $40 per vendor will be charged for an 8’x10′ space. A table and two chairs will be provided if needed.
