HOLLISTER
– Local Boy Scouts will collect and recycle Christmas trees this
weekend. Households in Hollister and San Juan Bautista will be
canvassed by Scouts on both Saturday, Jan. 3, and Sunday, Jan.
4.
Trees left curbside by 9 a.m. will be collected and recycled as
mulch. A payment of $7 is requested, and cash and checks made out
to BSA Troop 436 are accepted. Donations can be left with castoff
trees or under the doormat.

Free business seminar

HOLLISTER – A series of five free seminars entitled “Challenging Times Survival” offers insights into everything from personal finance to nutrition to parenting.

The seminars begin Monday, Jan. 5, with the first installment of “Financial Survival: How to Budget for Debt-Free Living.”

All the seminars take place at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St. in Hollister, and all begin at 7 p.m.

Presenters at the financial survival workshop are foreclosure and mortgage specialist Linda Stamatopoulos and Patti Stephens, a certified public accountant. Sessions are scheduled for Jan. 5, 6 and 9.

“Stress Survival: Stress Management Tools for Optimum Health” is set for Jan. 12, 13 and 16. Presenters are Carlton Oler, Ph.D., and licensed therapist Noelle Sladon.

“Family Survival: Protecting Your Marriage and Guiding Your Children” will be presented by Pierre Steenberg, Ph.D., Carlton Oler, Gene Oler, Ph.D., and Sladon on Jan. 19, 20 and 23.

Eileen Levy will present “Cooking and Nutritional Survival: How to Cook and Eat Well on a Limited Budget” on Jan. 26, 27 and 30.

“Surviving Your Bible: How to Study the Bible, Prophecy and Archaeology” will be presented by Steenberg, Elaine Posthumus and Pat Robertson on Feb. 6, 9 and 10.

Local GOP to meet

HOLLISTER – The January meeting of the San Benito County Republican Central Committee will be Wednesday, Jan. 7.

The meeting will be at the San Benito County Library, 470 Fifth St., Hollister.

Free health screening

GILROY – The public is invited to a free health screening including a check of blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and a mini-memory test on Friday, Jan. 23 at the Village Green senior living complex, 7600 Isabella Way in Gilroy.

The event, which includes hors d’oeurves, will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are appreciated. For more information, call 408-842-0113.
