GILROY –– Freshman Tanya Isbell beat out an infield single to the shortstop that scored pinch-runner Ariana King from second in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs to seal a thrilling 4-3 home victory for the Gavilan College softball team.

Isbell also pitched six strong innings on the hill, striking out five, walking five and giving up three earned runs on eight hits before giving way to freshman reliever Megan McDonald.

Moving to the outfield, Isbell made an inning-ending double-play when she chased down a fly ball and doubled up the runner on first base.

Isbell finished 2-for-4 at the plate with the game-winning RBI, while freshman third baseman Vicki Velasquez smacked a base-clearing triple to give the Lady Rams a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning.

Freshman Laura Hammond got the clutch single in the seventh inning to put the game-winning run on base and was replaced by King on the base paths.

Gavilan is now 1-0 in the South Division of the Coast Conference with the MPC Tournament up next at the Salinas Sports Complex on Saturday and Sunday.
