No more suspense.
Hollister’s Kelsey Jeffries has an opponent for Thursday’s Fight Night at the Tank at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. The card gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
The non-title female bout, scheduled for six rounds, will pit Jeffries against Florida’s Melissa Del Valle. This won’t be a tomato can for Jeffries, who holds four titles. Del Valle is 27-0 and might even have a size advantage.
“Del Valle usually fights at 135 pounds,” said Jeffries, who fights at 126 pounds and is 20-8. “She’s coming down in weight for the fight. I’ll fight her even she doesn’t make weight, but I want 20 per cent of her purse. It will be a tough fight, but I have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I want to give her her first loss.”
The weigh-in is tonight at the Crown Plaza Hotel in San Jose. Don’t expect the same scenario as last week’s weigh-in between Laila Ali and Christy Martin. The pair went at it pretty good and had to be separated.
“That was horrible,” said Jeffries of the pre-fight fiasco. “It was embarrassing. That may be all right for men, but ladies should be lady-like. That won’t happen with me.”
Win or lose, Jeffries has an IFBA title bout scheduled for Bakersfield on September 19. She’s going to the Fire Academy in Hollister on the weekends, studying and training during the week.
