Without a fight in 14 months, Hollister boxer Kelsey Jeffries is scheduled to be back in the ring in September, and perhaps not a moment too soon.
“It’s been too long,” Jeffries said.
Jeffries’ manager, Bruce Anderson, confirmed a contract has been signed for a Sept. 12 bout against Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton, a 29-year-old fighter out of Daly City. Jeffries and Julaton will meet for a 10-round bout at HP Pavilion in San Jose, with the vacated IBA Junior Featherweight (122 pounds) title on the line.
“Julaton is a good fighter,” Anderson said. “She was trained by Freddie Roach, so she’s got to know something.”
According to Boxrec.com, Julaton is 4-1-1 during a career that began in 2007. Following victories against Margherita Valentini, Carly Batey, Clara De La Torre and Salina Jordan, Julaton has since posted a draw against Johanna Mendez and lost a split decision to Dominga Olivo.
“I know she had a lot of amateur fights,” Jeffries said. “So 4-1-1, that doesn’t really mean anything. She has a lot of experience as an amateur.
“It’s gonna be a good fight.”
Julaton’s bout against Olivo was her last scheduled fight, a fight held on Aug. 21, 2008, nearly one year ago.
“But she’s a good fighter,” Anderson said. “She’s quick. Kelsey is not gonna have some walk in the park with her.”
Known as “The Road Warrior,” Jeffries has certainly made a name for herself within the boxing industry by compiling seven belts, including both the NABF and IBA super bantamweight titles, as well as one super featherweight belt and four featherweight titles.
At 41-9-1, Jeffries’ last fight was June 12, 2008, against Jessica “Goodnite” Mohs at the Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort in Canyonville, Ore. Jeffries, 33, delivered a fourth-round knockout of Mohs.
Jeffries’ September fight at The Tank will be her first since September of 2006, when she defeated Stephanie Dobbs by a technical knockout. Jeffries is 8-0 in her career at The Tank.
“I’m so excited,” Jeffries said. “It’s good to be back, finally back at home. I don’t really get to fight at home too often.”
Jeffries said trainer Buddy McGirt will be in her corner on Sept. 12 for the junior lightweight bout.
Tickets are expected to go on sale sometime next week.
“From now until the fight,” Anderson said, “she’ll have her nose to the grindstone.”
Anderson noted that Jeffries’ regular weight is approximately 124 pounds, so making the 122-pound contract weight shouldn’t be a problem. Furthermore, Jeffries, who is known for her continuous training regimen, whether there is a fight scheduled or not, is said to be sparring twice a week and has been for some time.
“As far as conditioning, she’s conditioned to go tomorrow,” Anderson said. “She’s ready to go into the ring at any time.”
