San Benito boys water polo goes 0-3 at St. Francis invite
HOLLISTER
After San Benito entered a pair of teams at last weekend’s Carmel Invitational, each of which finished in second place in their respective brackets, the Lady ‘Balers returned to non-tournament play and trumped a visiting Lincoln squad 14-4 Monday in Hollister.
Although no individual scorers were available, coach Hayley Vandercook said everyone was able to play.
“They did really well this weekend and they were coming off of that,” Vandercook said.
The Lady ‘Balers are now 7-5 overall.
In Carmel, an opposing team dropped out late and San Benito decided to break their team into two squads as a result.
Competing with a White team, made up mostly of starters, and a Red team, which was mostly junior varsity members, each San Benito team delivered a 2-1 record.
The White team defeated Stevenson and Mount Pleasant before falling to Aragon, while the Red team beat Carmel A and Carmel B before losing to Notre Dame of Salinas.
No scores were available at press time.
San Benito will play Wednesday at home to Monterey at 4:30 p.m.
San Benito High Boys Water Polo
The San Benito boys water polo team was dealt a trio of difficult opponents last weekend at the St. Francis Invitational, and went 0-3 at the tournament.
After losing 18-10 to Los Altos, recently ranked No. 5 by the San Jose Mercury News, the Haybalers dropped a 17-9 match to Archbishop Mitty and a 12-4 decision to Gunn.
“All three were pretty solid, but we’re just not there yet,” coach Tom Agan said. “We got a rough seed, but we’re not playing to our potential on the flip side of that.”
In the three games combined, goalie Kyle Reuther made 30 blocks. Jordan Schafer had nine goals, Ryan Whiteside five, Matt McCullough two and Nick Angulo four. Thomas Parcell, Morris Stevens and Josh Schafer each scored one goal a piece.
The ‘Balers, which fall to 3-6 on the year, will host Monterey on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
