The San Benito High girls water polo team compiled a 2-3 record at the 32-team Central Coast Showdown at Clovis West last weekend, where the team’s three losses were decided by a total of four goals.

Opening the massive water polo tournament against Central, San Benito fell behind early by a 4-0 margin after one quarter. Later, in the fourth quarter, the Lady Balers trailed by a 10-4 margin before scoring four unanswered goals.

“We came back really well,” San Benito head coach Hayley Vandercook said.

Although the Lady Balers lost to Central 10-8, the fourth-quarter comeback turned into a bit of a trend at the Showdown tournament.

Following a 7-2 victory over San Joaquin in its second match, San Benito battled Yosemite, which carried a 7-2 lead going into the final stanza.

The Lady Balers lost, however, 8-7.

“We had a monster fourth quarter,” Vandercook said. “They played incredible in the fourth quarter.”

San Benito finished the tournament with a narrow 10-9 loss to Golden Valley, in which the Lady Balers fell behind 3-0 at the start, but posted an 8-4 victory over Tulare Western to finish tournament play.

Hannah Smith led the Lady Balers with eight goals over the five-match tournament. Catlin Schafer and Demi Gatrell each added seven goals apiece, while Amanda Virak and Jeanette Rodriguez tacked on six and five goals, respectively.

San Benito (2-3) will play at Gilroy on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
